We just tried out Kashi’s new Peanutty Chocolate Layered Granola Bars.
My kids loved them. You really can’t go wrong with anything chocolate in my house!
And, because my kids don’t really get any refined sugar in their diets, they didn’t bat an eye at the slightly off flavor of the date-sweetened chocolate!
I read some other reviews of this product on the Kashi site, and people definitely had complaints about the taste and texture of the chocolate. Because Kashi uses predominantly dates to sweeten this granola bar, it’s going to taste different to palates that are used to the overly-sweet flavor of cane sugar.
I personally appreciate the lower glycemic index of the dates, and the relatively low sugar content of 7 grams per serving. For a granola bar, that’s really quite good! The fact that it’s mostly unrefined sugars making up that number is even better news.
I have two complaints about the granola bar:
1. It contains milk. Milk is the last ingredient on the list and in my opinion, being that far down the list, it isn’t actually necessary. My kids tend to be sensitive to dairy and I don’t like seeing milk as an “afterthought” kind of ingredient. Kashi should use a little creativity and remove milk from the ingredients list entirely.
2. This granola bar doesn’t travel well. The chocolate, of course, melts. It’s a no-go for keeping in my emergency food stash in the car, and my purse may not be consistently cool enough to be safe. Since I only rely on this type of snack outside of the home, I probably won’t be buying them again except for a special treat for a specific occasion. When it comes to snack bars in my household, I need something that I can pass to the backseat passengers without fearing for the life of my upholstery!
If you want to try out the Kashi® TLC® Peanutty Chocolate Layered Granola Bars, all you have to do is email me with your address and I’ll pop a few in the mail to you. They might get a bit squished and melty, but hey, free snacks!
(I have quite a few samples, but obviously this is a while-supplies-last opportunity!)
